Hi folks, after a busy time here I’m with a new free transcription just for you. Previously I shared on the blog the entire Bailey’s work on Since I Fell for You, talking about his essential and clear drumming… here’s another tune from the same album.
“Messin’ Around” is a 12-bar blues composed by the jazz organist Jimmy Smith, included in the album Home Cookin’ (1959) featuring Kenny Burrell on guitar, Percy France on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Smith on the Hammond B-3 organ, and Donald Bailey on drums.
Here’s the head/intro played by Bailey. The ride cymbal keeps the time, together with the hi-hat and the bass drum (played on the quarter notes very lightly). He plays some comping ideas with the left hand, creating a conversation with the organ and the saxophone.
