Hi folks… Wow, after a busy time here I’m with a new free transcription just for you. Previously I shared on this blog the entire Bailey’s work on Since I Fell for You, talking about his essential and clear drumming… here’s another tune from the same album.
Messin’ Around is a 12-bar blues composed by the jazz organist Jimmy Smith, included in the album Home Cookin’ (1959) featuring Kenny Burrell on guitar, Percy France on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Smith on the Hammond B-3 organ and Donald Bailey on drums.
Here’s the head/intro played by Bailey. While the ride cymbal keeps the time, together with the hi-hat and the bass drum (played on the quarter notes very lightly), he plays some comping idea with the left hand, creating a conversation with the organ and the saxophone.
