Simplicity is not a simple thing.
Donald Bailey drumming on Jimmy Smith’s album Home Cookin’ (1959) is straightforward and clear, with a beautiful shuffle feel on the solos section. Here’s the full drum transcription of the tune “Since I Fell For You.” Even if not notated in the transcription, Donald Bailey plays the bass drum on the quarter notes very lightly – it’s not audible but I think he feathers the bass drum.
The tune was written by Buddy Johnson in 1945, and the most famous version was released by Lenny Welch in 1963. Jimmy Smith’s version has a 32-bars structure (AABA), with a variation on the head: 6 bars for the last ‘A’ + 4 bars as a bridge to the solos section.
