Polyrhythmic Independence Exercise – 3 over 4

Here’s an exercise to develop your independence, playing various cymbal patterns on a 3 over 4 pattern between the bass drum and the hi-hat. We start with the first basic pattern on the bass drum, then with the second one we add the hi-hat, alternating the two pedals.

On the second page of the PDF, there are some suggestions inspired by the bible of drumming Stick Control, playing the “R” on the bass drum and the “L” on the hi-hat. In the third and fourth exercises, we play respectively a combination of 2 (single beat combinations, exercise 3) and a paradiddle (single beat combinations, exercise 5). In addition to this, feel free to add your own foot patterns. Keep on drumming!
