Jimmy Smith – Messin’ Around (Head Drum Transcription)

After a busy time, here I am with a new free transcription! In the past months, I shared on the blog the complete drum transcription of Donal Bailey’s performance on Since I Fell for You by Jimmy Smith, talking about his essential and clear drumming. Here’s another tune from the same album.

“Messin’ Around” is a 12-bar blues composed by jazz organist Jimmy Smith, included in the album Home Cookin’ (1959) featuring Kenny Burrell on guitar, Percy France on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Smith on Hammond B-3 organ, and Donald Bailey on drums.

Here’s the Bailey transcription of the intro and head sections. The ride cymbal keeps the time together with the hi-hat and the bass drum (played on quarter notes very lightly). He plays some interesting comping ideas with the left hand, creating a conversation with the organ and saxophone.
