Stone Temple Pilots – Interstate Love Song (Drum Sheet Music)

“Interstate Love Song” is one of Stone Temple Pilots’ most iconic tracks. Released in 1994 as the third single from their album Purple, it became a defining hit of the ’90s alternative rock scene, showcasing the band’s ability to blend grunge with classic rock influences. The track features a captivating guitar riff, interesting chord changes, Scott Weiland’s signature vocals, Robert DeLeo’s sophisticated basslines, and a groove-driven drum part by Eric Kretz. The song’s structure seamlessly shifts from steady verses to an emotionally charged chorus, making it an enduring favorite among rock fans.

The Eric Kretz drum part revolves around a solid, heavy rock beat that locks in perfectly with the bassline. The main groove consists of a straight-ahead hi-hat pattern (with a flowing variation on the second beat), snare on 2 and 4, and a syncopated bass drum pattern that adds movement to the track. Snare ghost notes and buzz rolls give the beat extra depth, while the open/closed hi-hat pattern adds dynamics, creating movement within the groove. Kretz gives a distinct musical texture to each section, adding subtle hi-hat and bass drum variations and shifting to the ride cymbal in the chorus.

That’s an authentic rock song for drummers to develop groove consistency and musicality. The smooth flow of the drum part perfectly complements the song’s storytelling without overpowering its melodic core.

* I came across an unofficial drum track on YouTube featuring extra ghost notes on the last 16th note of the fourth beat and the second 16th note of the first beat. After listening closely to the song (slowing it down), I realized those ghost notes were not in the original recording or may have been omitted during the mixing process.
