Beyond the Beat: 8th-Note Triplets – Accent Combinations

In this lesson, we’ll apply the concept of one of my previous exercises in 16th notes to play accent combinations in an 8th-note triplet groove. The workout consists of 3 hi-hat accent combinations playing 8 bass drum patterns.

Accents should be played with the “shoulder” of the stick, using the tip for unaccented notes. Be sure to stay relaxed and avoid tension or any inconsistency. Don’t over-stress movements and minimize arm motion when playing these hi-hat patterns. Initially, you can play the hi-hat without accents, and once comfortable, start with the first pattern.

We start the exercise by playing the 8 bass drum combinations, repeating every bar at least four times, and moving smoothly to the next one. Make sure every bass drum note is in unison with the hi-hat, avoiding any flam. Start slowly at 60 bpm and gradually, day by day, increase the tempo. That’s a great exercise to strengthen your right hand, enhance your reading skills, and take your groove to the next level!

A proper way to study this exercise is to start with an accent combination, letter A, and play the 8 bass drum combinations. Then, you repeat the process to the other accents series, letters B and C, and take note of your progress.

Furthermore, here are 3 advanced accent variations. The first accent combination consists of quarter-note triplets, and the second is an inversion of the first. The third combination adds a polyrhythmic layer to the groove by playing a 3 over 4 accent combination.

Lastly, we play the 3 accent combinations (letters A, B, and C) on the ride cymbal, playing accents on the ride bell. You can also play and experiment with various foot ostinatos, enhancing your learning.

Practicing with the metronome is essential for your daily study, but don’t forget to play along with music. Here is a YouTube playlist including a Jeff Porcaro shuffle groove collection to help you practice the exercises and have fun.
