It’s a busy time, but here I am with a new jazz drum transcription. Conversation by Max Roach is a drum composition included in the album Deeds, Not Words (1958). The drum solo itself is a perfect example of the concept of melodic drumming (for further researches I recommend the instructional video “Melodic Drumming” by Ari Hoenig).
Max creates a melodic and lyric improvisation between the various voices of the drumset, repeating, developing, orchestrating and articulating his drum ideas with great clarity and intelligence. The different sections are well organized as shown:
- Intro;
- Head;
- Improvisation;
- Fast section;
- Improvisation (reprise at the original tempo);
- Coda (head reprise).
Here’s the download link, all the best!
