Max Roach was the first musician to record an album entirely based on triple meters, which was unusual until the mid-50s. In 1956 and 1957, he recorded as leader Jazz in 3/4 Time, featuring Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone, Billy Wallace on piano, George Morrow on double bass, and himself on drums.
Here’s the drum solo transcription for “Blues Waltz” (the album’s first track). The interesting fact is how Max Roach arranges musical ideas into four-bar phrases. A distinctive feature is the foot ostinato, with the bass drum on the first beat and the hi-hat on 2 and 3. As you can hear, the hi-hat is open with the left foot on the second beat, creating a splashy effect. The solo starts at 4:51 and the tempo is approximately 178 bpm. Keep on drumming!
