Simplicity is not a simple thing… Donald Bailey drumming on Jimmy Smith album Home Cookin’ is very simple and clear with a beautiful shuffle feel on the solo section. Here’s the full drum transcription of the tune Since I Fell for You, I personally think that Donald Bailey plays the bass drum on the quarter notes very lightly – it’s not audible but I think he feathers the bass drum.
The tune was written by Buddy Johnson in 1945 and released by Lenny Welch in 1963 as a ballad, while Jimmy Smith’s version has a 32-bars structure (AABA) with a four bars intro repeated at the end of the head.
