Murray Spivack was a Russian-born American sound engineer. He was also a drum teacher whose students included Louie Bellson, Joe Morello, David Garibaldi, Vinnie Colaiuta, Chuck Silverman, Chad Wackerman, Ed Shaughnessy, and many more.
Some years ago I was at the masterclass of drummer Phil Maturano and he spoke about the Spivack technique, I had never heard this before, it was very interesting and caught my curiosity…
Recently my drum teacher spoke to me about this technique, explaining the fundamentals, the grip, and introducing a series of exercises playing the Stick Control (Single Beat Combinations) at very slow metronome speed (40 bpm) focusing on the grip and the mechanic of the stroke.

I’ve been applying the Spivack grip by watching some very useful videos. I favor the French grip (as I know the Spivack technique can be useful whatever the grip you choose), but I have one doubt about the angle of the stick respect to the forearm in the said position. Do you have information about this particular issue?

I’m not an expert of the Spivack technique but I think, talking with the drum teacher who let me know this method, the stick is almost “inline” with the forearm. Just a natural continuation of the forearm.
